Along with their peers across the country, students at Bootham School are today celebrating the first set of GCSE results based on the normal exam structure for the first time in three years …and there really is a great deal to celebrate!

Almost one third of the cohort achieved at least nine Grades 9-7, with 12 students gaining at least 9 Grades 9-8 and 4 students (Adrian Lee, Theo McCartney, Douglas Brewer and Irie Theyers) being awarded 10 or more Grade 9s.

In a remarkable show of twin power, Adrian and Douglas, in combination with their respective twins Bedat and Lawrence, earned 37 Grade 9s between them!

“It’s been a really tough couple of years for students and teachers alike, so these results are very welcome reward for the way that they have responded and the huge commitment they have shown to making the very most of a bad situation” said Headmaster Chris Jeffery. “I say every year -and do so with great conviction this year in particular- that these results, however excellent, only show part of the picture of our students’ success: they can hint at the effort, dedication and sometimes sacrifice that our young people have brought to their preparation, but can never tell the important stories of those who have overcome real personal or learning difficulties, battled mental health issues, or made terrific improvements to achieve results they didn’t think possible. That’s why we want to celebrate the achievements of all!”

“Furthermore, as a Quaker school, we will always understand our purpose as being far more about what our students achieve with their results to make the world around them better, than merely the results themselves.”
