Did you know that 5.8% of parents in York don’t get their first choice of Primary School ?

It may not seem a high figure, but if you are one of the 5.8% (up from last year), then it means an awful lot.  The past year has focused everyone’s thoughts on their children’s education and learning, and allocation day on Friday will have brought that home even more than normal.

But what do you do if you didn’t get your first choice…

  • Did your child flourish in a small group at Nursery?
  • Thrive with a focus on creative learning, outdoor exploration and the arts?

Then our Reception class is the perfect stepping stone to more formal learning.

Our outstanding practice gives children the opportunity to develop their early skills, learning and enjoying a broad curriculum, while being supported by a team of experienced and dedicated specialists.

Bootham believe that placing the welfare, wellbeing and personal development of its pupils as its top priority creates the optimum conditions for them to be able to achieve their best academically.  In short, happy children do well.  Our teachers, teaching assistants and support staff know every child and will always make time to listen.  That’s because every member of our community matters.

A Year Like No Other

After such an unusual and difficult year, starting full time education in September may seem a daunting prospect for both parent and child.  All of our children can access individual and small group support to help them gain emotional resilience.  By talking about emotions, worries, highs and lows we believe that we are giving our children the best chance of thriving as adults.

Not only that but every child at Bootham is supported to be the best they possibly can – sometimes that means help for a particular learning need, sometimes that means extension and challenge, very often it means both!

Bootham is not in the business of telling children what to believe or who to become.  Instead we give them space to search for and find truth for themselves, and encourage them to examine their place in the world, especially in making that world a better place.  This means our children learn and grow in a community that places great value on individuality, self-discovery and kindness alongside learning, ambition and academic success.

We understand that the four year old who joins Reception today needs preparing for a world we can barely imagine.  To do that, we need to equip our children with a set of skills that will enable them to become adaptable and resilient.

5 Simple Skills

No matter what, we understand that starting full time education in September will be a very different prospect to previous years.  Lockdown has meant that valuable practical and social skills haven’t had the opportunity to be practiced as much as before.  Much more important than learning to write their name or number counting, are these 5 simple skills, which will prepare your child perfectly. Please feel free to share.
