It has been a really enjoyable and promising start to the sporting year. Pre-season training saw upwards of twenty students come in to school the week before the start of term and participate in 3 days of physical preparation in football and netball. Hopefully this will stand the teams in good stead for the season ahead.
The 1st XI kicked off their season with the schools first outing in the U18 Independent Schools FA National competition. The competition is fierce in this tournament and Bootham drew Newcastle School for Boys in the first round. The game was a close affair, however after a 0-0 first half Bootham started to dominate possession and chances. The team went 2-0 ahead only for Newcastle to claw two goals back. Bootham scored two more with Newcastle scoring a late goal to make things a bit nervy near the end. The team deserved their 4-3 victory however and will now travel to London to play against John Lyon School in the next round.
A Bootham 2nd XI played against a visiting Chilean team (Mackay School) on Thursday evening. With a bumper crowd watching (and singing) the game could have gone either way, however Mackay School ended up narrow 2-1 winners. Joe Smart did score a very neat header for the ‘2’s’ but despite pressurising the visitors goal late on it wasn’t quite enough.
The U13 and U14 hockey teams played away against Queen Mary’s – two good games, with some good skills on show, unfortunately ended in 2 losses for our girls. Also on Saturday our 1st XI played a team from St Peter’s – a fantastic result for Bootham as they recorded a 2-0 victory.
