Bootham students address MPs on climate change

Bootham students Anahit Davtyan and Nika Protkra visited the Houses of Parliament on Wednesday 6th December to talk to MPs about the global consequences of fast fashion.

They were selected to co-host the Oxfam Get Creative for Climate Justice Exhibition after impressing organisers with their artwork, which featured mock Vogue covers.

The event, organized by a coalition of charities, aligned with the COP28 summit and aimed to raise awareness about climate justice, particularly addressing its impact on the global south, and the environmental repercussions of fast fashion.

The visit also highlighted Bootham School’s robust social action programme which encourages students to actively engage in projects that address local and global challenges. It empowers students to make a positive impact on society, fostering a sense of empathy and responsibility.

Claire Hollis, Head of Social Action at Bootham, said: “Anahit and Nika worked with our school sustainability team to create works of art that speak of the huge price those in the Global South pay for us to consume fast fashion. We were so lucky to have circular clothing organisation KindofYou to support us in styling and photographing our images and to our local Oxfam branch who lent us the garments you see on the finished Vogue covers.”
