Bootham School is looking for a Saturday Catering Assistant who is hardworking, flexible, polite and helpful and able to work calmly under pressure in a busy school kitchen that typically serves around 500 hot lunches on a Saturday to students, parents and staff.

Duties include clearing pots and cutlery and operating the dishwasher and sluice, cleaning the dining room and kitchen after lunch service, and could include basic cold food preparation (sandwiches, salads, fruit).

You must be able to maintain high standards of cleanliness, hygiene and customer service.

Previous experience of working in a school kitchen or similar environment would be useful.

£8.75 per hour. Uniform and free meal provided.

Job Title:                         Catering Assistant (Senior School)

Reports to:                      Catering Manager

Staff Supervised:  None

Key Contacts and Relationships:

Catering Manager, all colleagues in catering team, inc Chefs, all staff and students at the School.

 Overall Purpose:

To be an effective member of the school catering team, primarily to wash up and clean as directed, to meet the standards required, at the times and for the occasions required, whilst respecting the Quaker ethos of the School.

 Key Accountabilities:

  • Wash all equipment used in the preparation of food including, pots, pans, utensils, crockery and cutlery to ensure that the kitchen wash up area is maintained to the high standards required by the School.
  • Assist with any cleaning of equipment, e.g. dishwashers, sluice and other equipment in the wash-up area in order to ensure that it continues to function efficiently.
  • Assist with some basic food preparation.
  • Report any faults or problems to the Catering Manager as soon as possible to avoid more serious situations arising, having particular regard for own health and safety and the health and safety of other users.
  • Assist the rest of the team with any other tasks that need carrying out under the direction of the Catering Manager, e.g. setting up the Dining Room and clearing away.

Hours of work

7.30am to 2.30pm on Saturdays throughout the year

Overalls will be provided by the School you will be expected to keep them clean and in good condition. You will also receive meals and refreshments free of charge while on duty.
