Bootham Junior School Learning Support Teacher, Shelley Roper had a chance conversation with her then Year 5’s back in 2019 about a race she was taking part in to raise money for charity.  The children immediately decided they would like to take part and help raise even more.  Cue a dozen Year 5’s and a few siblings getting really ‘Pretty Muddy’ and helping to raise several hundred pounds taking part in Race For Life. Pretty Muddy Kids is a muddy obstacle course for children. Held on the same day as their Pretty Muddy® events, and featuring many of the same obstacles, they allow children to get in on the fun too! They loved it so much they asked if they could do again next year, but the pandemic scuppered their chances for 2020.  In that time the students moved up to Bootham Senior School, but never forgetting their promise to Shelley, they made sure they took part this year, and they brought more friends and family!

This year, on Sunday 12 September over approx. 30 children and their parents took part in the Pretty Muddy Kids, not only that but Shelley then raced the Pretty Muddy 5k immediately after with friends, as she does every year in memory of her friend Emma. Shelley has raised thousands of pounds over the years for Cancer Research and St Leonards Hospice.

A fantastic example of the family and community spirit that is at the heart of Bootham, which only seems to have grown through such a difficult 18 months.
