Charlotte Ellery, former Bootham student who left College 2 in 2016 and is now studying Classics at King’s College London, has just won first prize in a prestigious competition open to students and staff at King’s College and The Courtauld Institute of Art. The challenge was to share their own contemporary takes on the ‘classical’ – whether as something beautiful to celebrate, or something oppressive to interrogate and challenge.  Submissions drew on a range of media, including painting, drawing, film, photography, sculpture, music, textiles, poetry, illustrated story book, collage and computer game.  A panel of judges – consisting of staff from King’s and The Courtauld, as well as two acclaimed artists – had the task of allocating the first, second and third prizes.  Charlotte’s submission was a classically inspired oil painting ‘First Glance’.

Congratulations to Charlotte on this great achievement! To see the full painting please scroll down…
