Published 27 November 2009 FROM POLE TO POLE What a treat our College Geographers have had over the last two weeks. Following the lecture from Penn Hadlow the Arctic explorer at the Student Earth Summit last week, this week we had a brilliant lecture from the Italian geophysicist and explorer Dr Fausto Ferracioli from the British Antarctic Survey. Fausto gave us an incredible overview of current research into the most remote, highest, coldest and windiest continent on Earth; apparently we know more about Mars than we do about Antarctica! We were also treated to a humorous insight of the international relations between research groups working in Antarctica, apparently the Italians have the best food and Americans have the most man power! Important Reminder: Would all those students travelling to Iceland in March bring their passports to Liz Brown for photocopying by Monday 30th November.
DODGING FOR CHARITY Great fun was had by all in the first Bootham Ultimate Dodgeball charity event. Seventeen teams took part, raising £102 for the charities of the term, Homestart and the British Heart Foundation. Winners were BBB in the Schoolrooms group, Lord Garfield Thelonius Remington 3rd and entourage in the Seniors group and College winners were Multiple Scoregasms. Many thanks to all those who took part, helped and sponsored.
PUDSEY BEARS FOUND! Tom Plowman, James Golton, Tom Clarke, and Will McDonald raised £75 for Children in Need by hiding Pudsey bears around the school for pupils to find. Well done to the boys for using their initiative to raise money for charity. ST NICHOLAS FAYRE/FESTIVE SHOPPING As many York residents will know, the St Nicholas Fayre offers a range of markets specialising in gifts, crafts, and the very best in local farm produce. Outside markets move into Parliament Street, St Sampsons Square and Coppergate while the Guildhall provides a home for 'Made In Yorkshire' artists and crafters from across the region. So that we can all enjoy the festive activities we are pleased to advise that Bootham parents will be allowed to park at school, in the central playground, at the following times:
All cars left unattended must display a Parent Parking Permit. Please note that the school gates will be locked at 9 p.m. This is the first year we have extended the times when parents can park and hope that everyone parks responsibly and that this experiment runs smoothly. RESULTS Swimming: On Wednesday we visited the Mount School to swim against their U12,13,15 and Senior teams – a fantastic gala with some incredibly close races. Unfortunately, the Mount girls proved to be a little too strong in the younger age groups and beat us. Our Senior team, however, won their age group convincingly. Basketball: The U16s had a tough game on Wednesday against Easingwold school. The lead kept changing hands in each quarter, however Bootham came from behind in the last ten minutes to win 47-45. Ben Lam top scored with 17 points. Unfortunately the U14 game against Tadcaster and the U15 game against All Saints were both postponed by the opposition. They will now be rearranged after Christmas. On Thursday the U19 Girls’ Basketball team travelled to Hall Cross School in Doncaster – a well battled game, against class opposition ending in a win for the home team. Football: The 1st XI lost 6-2 against Northallerton College in the North Yorkshire league. Bootham goals came from Nick Gunson and Simon Lambert.
