MEET THE ARCHITECT – SEE THE DEVELOPMENT PLANS

John Squires (www.squiresandbrown.co.uk) will be returning to school next Saturday 13th March to meet with parents and present the ideas for the school’s development programme.  All parents would be most welcome to come to the presentation and discuss this with John.  He will be coming to the Coffee and Croissants on Saturday 13th January from 9-10 a.m. in the Committee Room.

OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE RECITAL ROOM

The first (of three) official openings of the newly refurbished Recital Room took place on Wednesday evening. The audience enjoyed a true taste of Georgian elegance, with a pleasant interlude of music and readings. The room looks splendid and is already proving a great asset to school life. All parents and donors to the appeal were invited to apply for an invitation to one of the opening events, the next two dates are almost full, but if you would like to come, please get in touch with Sally Culpan via culpans@boothamschool.com

INFORMATION ABOUT PROPOSED VISIT TO JAVA, SUMMER 2011

For those parents and children interested in the proposed visit to Java, Indonesia in summer 2011 there will be a short (30 minute or so) meeting in the School Hall at 12.30 on Saturday 13th March.

Janet Cochrane (from Leeds Metropolitan University) is kindly working with us in the planning and delivery of this trip and will be speaking about the trip and answering questions. She specialises in tourism's contribution to biodiversity conservation, tourism in Asia, and rural tourism and has close ties with Kaliandra, the proposed location for this visit. Please visit their website at http://www.kaliandrasejati.org/EN/ . If you are interested please come along to find out more. The trip will probably be open only to those pupils from Upper Senior and College 1 and 2 in July 2011 (i.e. those currently in Lower Senior and above) as it will involve some strenuous activity and could involve overnight stays with local families. Early indications show that the likely cost will be in the region of £2000 for almost 3 weeks although this is an estimate and it will change.  If you have any queries please contact RobTribe at rob.tribe@boothamschool.com

Please note, If the venue changes, suitable arrangements will be made and signs will be put up to advise as to the new location of the meeting.

DANGEROUS DRIVING

The following email was received this week and we feel we cannot do better than to share it with everyone in the Bootham community. We regularly debate the difficulty of combining our wish for  a welcoming access to the school with minimising the potential danger to pedestrians. Once again, may we remind everyone of the need to drive AT WALKING PACE and with utmost care, and to thank the vast majority of you who do!

Dear Ms Castell,

After lunch on Saturday I witnessed two disturbing things:

A driver entered the grounds at what must have been 25 miles an hour.

A driver (with a child ) drove down Portland St, into the school premises and made several turns with one hand whilst talking on a mobile.

I have raised these issues with Mr Taylor before and he fully understands the extent of the problem. It would be a disaster if something were to happen to a child on school premises.

The above are serious offences, morally and socially unacceptable and have as we know been the cause of much misery for too many innocent people.

Do let me have some feedback.

Regards

GEOGRAPHICAL ASSOCIATION SIXTH FORM CONFERENCE

Congratulations to the College II team who came joint first in the Energy Budget exercise during the Geographical Association Sixth Form conference on Monday.  The team which comprised Tom Ashton, James Catchpole, George Chambers, Alex Heald, Will McEvoy, Richard Pearce, James Reeder and Danny Robertson chose a rather controversial scheme employing 21 wind farms to generate the energy required to power the island they had been charged with governing.  The exercise, organised by Dr Alison Willows of the Open and Brighton Universities, was a great opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the complexities of providing a secure and sustainable energy future.

CALIFORNIA 2010 - SPONSORSHIP

27 Bootham boys are heading for California in the summer for a ten day football (soccer) tour. The boys will play in three games as well as having a number of professional coaching sessions. Due to the temperatures at that time of year, we will need to purchase two new sets of short sleeved kit to suit the conditions. Therefore, we are looking for interested parties who could possibly help sponsor the teams (approx £1000) in order to buy the necessary kit. Please email or phone Andy Bell (bella@boothamschool.com) if you could help in any way.

RESULTS

Hockey:  On Monday we held the Intermediate House Hockey competition on a bitterly cold afternoon (pictured above), but some well battled matches nonetheless, ending in a victory for Firbank.  On Tuesday it was the turn of the Junior Hockey teams to represent their houses.  The winners were Brigflatts. On Thursday evening, the U12 and U13 Hockey teams played away against Manor:  two close fought matches ending in a victory for the U12s 1-0 and a loss for the U1’s by 5-2.

Netball:  On Tuesday the Intermediate House Netball competition took place which resulted in a victory for Firbank.  On Wednesday our U18A and B Netball teams played away against the Mount.  The B team played with a couple of ‘stand in’ players and put up a great battle in a very pleasant game. The A team had a battle on their hands after losing their first quarter 6-1, but to their credit, and down to their skilful play throughout the final three quarters, they fought back to win 16-15.

Football: The under 12 team had a very close game on Monday away to Read School. The team played some good football and had lots of chances, but unfortunately lost 3-2. On Tuesday the under 14 team visited Manor School. They defended well and controlled the majority of the game to run out 4-0 winners. Goals came from Freddy Batchelor-Collins (2), George Baines and Greg Harrison.

The Upper Schoolroom Inter house tournament took place on Monday. Firbank were dominant after convincingly winning all their games. In a closer Lower Senior competition on Thursday, Pendle took the honours, followed closely by Brigflatts, Swarthmore and then Firbank.
