Lower Schoolroom students underneath the fractals image
Lower Schoolroom form 7CO went on a whistle stop tour of the York Science and Innovation Grand Tour opening day on Wednesday. They walked from school to Parliament Street admiring the images posted along the way, which included Bootham's own image of ‘fractals’ (self- repeating patterns found throughout nature) discovered by Lewis Fry Richardson, a Bootham Old Scholar. Find out more about Fractals by viewing our web page. The students then enjoyed some time at the stalls in Parliament Square, where they played ‘Tug-of-War’ with Magdeburg Hemispheres with the Institute of Physics, learnt about immunology with the University of York and looked at Solar flares through a telescope. They were commended for their behaviour and attitude.
JUNIOR BOARDERS’ DINNER
Thursday 24th May saw the inaugural Junior Boarders' Dinner, in which our Lower Schoolroom and Middle Schoolroom boarders invited selected members of staff to join them in the splendid setting of the Georgian Dining Room at 51 Bootham. The group were very well looked after by catering Manager Nick Lewis and chef Sophie Atkin, who put their culinary skills to excellent use. Afterwards, staff were given a tour of the boarding houses by their hosts.

JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS AT BOOTHAM JUNIOR SCHOOL
Preparations for our Jubilee day celebrations are now well underway! Union Jack bunting has started to appear, beautiful crowns are being created and the National Anthem is being rehearsed. All of this preparation will come together on Friday when the whole of the Junior School will have their very own “Big Lunch” and Jubilee Party.
BEAST NEWS
Our latest Eco-Schools committee meeting on 23rd May was held to discuss the plans for a wildlife area along the new path to the Union Street car park. The plan aims to make the habitat as bio-diverse as possible, including a pond. After half term, some volunteers will be finalising the digging of the pond in the wildlife area. As part of the wildlife project, we’re asking that people sponsor a bulb to assist in the purchase of early flowering bulbs like snowdrops, bluebells and other wildflower plugs. More information is available here.

SPRING BARBECUE AND FAMILY FUN DAY AT THE JUNIOR SCHOOL
We were lucky enough to have brilliant sunshine and clear blue skies on Sunday for this popular occasion. The children were entertained by Professor Fiddlesticks and his circus skills act and Year 6 pupils ran a variety of games stalls, raising an impressive £80.69 for Macmillan Cancer Support in the process. Thanks to everyone who helped at and supported this event, especially Tom and his barbecue chefs who cooked huge quantities of burgers and sausages for everyone to enjoy.

SPORTS RESULTS
Athletics: In the recent combined events competition held at Rydale Stadium, we had some fantastic performances from our athletes. In the junior boys, Kane Curtis won the competition with Jonah Tomlin-Kent finishing third. In the Junior girls competition, Kishori Young finished second, and in the Intermediate boys, Oscar Massey also won with Eddie Hildreth finishing third. There were also some great performances from the younger athletes who were performing against older pupils in preparation for the same event next year. Hopefully these great performances will continue as we move into the athletics season. Kane and Jonah have also been selected to represent York in the upcoming North Yorkshire Competition in June. Both have produced excellent performances in the high jump to earn their place in the team. Well done!
Rounders: On Monday our U12 and U13 teams played against Millthorpe at Bootham Junior School. It was an outstanding win for the U12s 26-1, and a convincing victory for the U13s 9½-3½. Also on Monday the U14 and U15 teams played against Huntington – two very good wins for our teams, 17-8 and 25-7 respectively. On Tuesday we travelled to St Olaves to play against their U12 and U13 teams; a nail biting match for the U12s, narrowly losing 16½ - 14. The U13s battled hard against strong opposition and lost 21½ - 6. The U14 and U15 teams visited St Peter’s on Wednesday ending in a narrow defeat for the U14s 20-15 and the U15s lost 18-5.
Girls’ Tennis: Our U18 tennis team travelled to St Peter’s on Wednesday afternoon. It was a valiant effort by our girls, but ended in a win for the opposition.
Boys’ Tennis: The U14 team lost to St Peter's on Monday (5-1) but then managed a superb 6-0 victory against Wigginton Tennis Club on Wednesday. The U13s tennis team also won one and lost one this week. They lost to St Olave's on Tuesday but then also gained a 6-0 victory against Fulford on Wednesday.
Cricket: The U13 team lost to Yapham cricket club on Saturday. Bootham bowled well but unfortunately did not score enough runs to make the game close. The U12 team travelled to Read school on Saturday and narrowly lost by three wickets. On Monday the U13 team played in a very competitive league game against Sherburn. Bootham scored 73-9 in their innings and managed to get eight wickets before Sherburn got the runs with an over to spare.
