English Tutor    Ref No: TEACH0415

.8 Contract, plus or minus .2; teaching one-to-one and in small groups

We seek to appoint an inspiring and well-qualified English teacher to join our forward thinking and highly successful English department from September 2015. You will teach on a one-to-one basis, or with small groups, working with students needing extra support with English, across the age range, although the majority of students will be below A Level. Some of this teaching will be with regular students throughout the year, some will be on a more ad hoc basis to offer temporary English support as necessary to students needing to boost their skills. This may at times equate to a full-time equivalent post, but may fluctuate. Flexibility is, therefore, required!

The successful candidate will have a good honours degree, preferably in English but other disciplines will be considered. We require an outstanding practitioner able to promote innovative and adventurous teaching and enthuse students with a lively passion for English while encouraging them to become independent learners.

Head of MFL      Ref No: TEACH0315

We are looking for a talented linguist, an innovative teacher and a strategic leader to take forward the work of our outstanding Modern Foreign Languages department. Your main language will be French, Spanish, German or Mandarin; you will be able to teach a second of these, or another language, as well. However, your own language specialism is less important than your leadership potential. This is an exciting opportunity to review current provision and set the future course of language teaching at Bootham.

‘RESIDENT GRADUATE’ OPPORTUNITY (from September 2015 until July 2016)  Ref No SUPP0315

If you’re completing your studies in 2015, or have graduated in the last 2 or 3 years, this may offer you an exciting chance to do something valuable and enjoyable while having time to think about your future direction, and while living in our beautiful surroundings in the centre of York!

Bootham School has a well-established Resident Graduate programme. Every September, a team of 6 or 7 graduates join us for a fulfilling year taking a leading role in the school’s leisure activities scheme, and assisting with duties in boarding houses. We offer you full board and lodging during school terms and a small remuneration, with further opportunities to pick up paid work around the school.

The programme is excellent for those unsure of the way ahead and offers purposeful and busy activity with youngsters. For those seeking to undertake further studies at university after a first degree this scheme provides an excellent opportunity to get involved in the extra-curricular life of a distinguished school while studying. While it would provide useful experience for those planning to undertake PGCEs, we have, however, found it to be difficult for such students to combine the responsibilities of a Resident Graduate with the time commitment of teaching practice.

Bootham is a very different kind of school. We aim to be recognised as pioneering the most adventurous and liberating education in the UK! See our website to get a feel for our culture and atmosphere. We think you’ll like what you see.

All applications are welcome, and we are always interested in applications from male graduates who can live and work in the boys’ boarding houses.
