Bootham Slang

'Just had a juice meeting with my lord, for tuzhering a bug'

This is old Bootham slang for 'Just had a ticking-off from the Headmaster, for breaking a light bulb.' In 1925 a collection of Bootham slang was published. One particular word from the Dictionary of Bootham Slang was 'oick', which found its way into the Oxford English Dictionary, as the first example of the word ever recorded in writing. The OED defines the word:

Depreciatory schoolboy word for a member of another school; an unpopular or disliked fellow pupil.

It then gives the specific use of the Bootham definition, from 'oickman', a labourer, shopkeeper, used as a disparaging term. The word '(h)oick' is recorded at Bootham as meaning 'to spit'. Another expression also in the Dictionary of Bootham Slang is quoted in the Penguin Dictionary of Historical Slang, 1972 (with reprints) which attributes the phrase 'sucks!' (defined as an 'expression of derision') to Bootham School. It is almost certainly different in origin from the more contemporary and vulgar expression 'it sucks'.
