study and a source of reading for pleasure.”
Introduction
The John Bright Library is located on the first floor of the main school building.
It is staffed by the librarian from 8.15am until 4.45pm, but remains open in
the evenings for prep.
The library catalogue can easily be viewed when you are in school at www.boothamstudent.co.uk –
just click on the “Access The Library” button. If you need any help, please ask the Librarian.
Borrowing
All users may borrow from the John Bright Library. Books are loaned for
two weeks, but may be renewed if no other user needs them.
To borrow an item, take it to the librarian who will issue it on the library
management system. If the librarian is not present then fill in the manual
issue sheet on the counter.
It is important that you return or renew books promptly so that other users
can have access to them. Overdue reminder will be sent to you via the form
register.
Fiction
The John Bright Library holds c.4000 classic and contemporary fiction books.
The books are arranged in alphabetical order by the author’s surname.
There are lists of suggested reading for Schoolrooms, Seniors / College,
and quick reads.
New books are displayed on the library counter for a few weeks before being
shelved, so you can check out the new arrivals.
Recommendations for new books are always welcome.
Non-Fiction
The information (non-fiction) books are arranged in numerical order by
the Dewey Decimal classification system. The main classification areas

100 Philosophy and psychology
200 Religion
300 Social sciences
400 Languages
500 Science and mathematics
600 Technology
700 The arts
800 Literature
900 Geography and history
When you use the catalogue, make sure that you write down the classification
number so that you can find your book easily. If in doubt, please ask the
librarian.
Reference
Books A collection of reference only books is kept at the library counter. These include
encyclopaedias, dictionaries, yearbooks and atlases. Reference books are just
for use in the library.
Quaker Collection The John Bright Library has a collection of works by and about Quakers.
These are shelved alongside the reference books, but may be borrowed.
The school archives also hold a collection of resources by and about
Quakers.
Magazines The John Bright Library subscribes to c.40 magazines. These are displayed on
the magazine racks and are only for use in the library. Back issues of some
titles are kept on the shelf underneath the display stands.
Audiovisual Resources The John Bright Library holds a small, but increasing, collection of DVDs that
may be borrowed overnight or at weekends. There are also some videos and audio
books which may be borrowed for two weeks. The library has a small portable DVD
player that may be used in the library to watch DVDs.
ICT The John Bright Library has wireless Internet access.
There are 8 desktop computers linked to the school network.
In addition, there are also laptops which may be used in the library. Please
ask the librarian for these.
The library has a black and white laser printer.
The library sells 2GB memory sticks for £10 which can be added to the school
bill.
Photocopying The John Bright Library has a black and white photocopier for A4 and A3 sized
copying. Please ask the librarian if you need to photocopy anything.
Newspaper clippings The library keeps collections of clippings about topical issues. These are kept
in trays near the entrance to the Fiction Library. There is also a notice board
near the library entrance which has newspaper cuttings about stories in the news.
Rules and regulations The John Bright Library aims to provide a pleasant place to study. To meet this
aim, all users are asked to respect the right of all library users to study quietly.
Mobile phones should not be used in the library and personal stereo equipment
(e.g. IPods, walkmans, MP3 players) should be at a level that no-one else can
hear. Food and drink (other than water) should not be brought into the library.
Resources and equipment should be treated with care and loaned items returned
promptly.
In the event of fire or an emergency, users should immediately leave their belongings
in the library and quietly evacuate the building to the assembly areas.
