We have an informal, friendly and thriving PTA
at Bootham Junior made up of parents and teachers (some are both!). Involvement
in the PTA does not require attendance at every meeting and we have a
great pool of supporters who come along to help at our many annual events. We
raise on average £3 - £4k a year and all events aim to be family and
school community-orientated. Money raised has been given to the school
to enhance the pupils’ environment in a number of ways such as playground
activities and facilities such as the adventure playgrounds for
Infants and Juniors and the newly completed Quiet Area
as well as supporting after school clubs such as Cookery and Gardening.
Fund Raising Target The PTA has already contributed £5k towards the cost of our fantastic new multi-surface courts and both schools are making full use of this excellent new facility. We should be on track to make the additional £5k contribution through our first ever Harvest Ball on Saturday 15 Novenber (tickets on sale now) and our Christmas Fayre (Saturday 6 December).
What do we do?
We aim to combine our two objectives of fund raising while offering fun,
social activities for the children and their families…….
Summer Fete: usually takes place towards the end of June and
weather permitting, is held on our vast Sports Field. The older children
have stalls to offer nail painting, hair braiding, ‘Guess the number
of sweets in the jar’ – all those old favourites. We have a host of
wonderful businesses who come along to tempt us with jewellery, gifts,
plants, toiletries, candles, interiors, accessories…..A bouncy castle
and a cream tea tent completes a wonderful afternoon which children,
parents, friends and families all enjoy.
Christmas Fayre: a great start to the Christmas ….Full of festive
fun, great stalls with lots of gift ideas, mulled wine (non-alcoholic)
and of course, a visit from the great man in red!!Many of our events
are non-fund raising and simply offer a fun time for our children and
their families and friends - school discos, film evenings and the like.
We always love getting new ideas for things to do.

Questions and Answers Is formal membership of PTA required?
No – we are an open PTA with many parents attending meetings when they
can or simply helping out at events or in the organisation of events.
You do not need to come along to every meeting but if you can, they are
from 7.30pm – 9.00pm and we rotate which evening so that we can try to
accommodate as many of us as possible. We do have a Chair, a Treasurer
and a Secretary – that’s the formal bit!
Is the PTA a charity?
BJS PTA benefits from the charitable status of Bootham School so where
possible, we can reclaim gift aid. For this reason, we encourage all
parents, where appropriate, to sign an annual gift aid form. Given that
we are trying to raise £10k, the additional
28% which can be claimed on donations can make a big difference for us.
Who supervises PTA events which the children attend?
All PTA events which children attend are supervised by both teachers
and parent volunteers.
Who decides how and where the money raised is spent?
We enjoy very lively meetings where ideas for fund raising targets are
shared by parents, teachers and often the children themselves who have
shared their ideas with their parents or teachers. The current target
of the tennis courts has been under discussion for a long time and we
have finally decided to bite the bullet and really go for it so all help
will be much appreciated.
Can I find out how much money the PTA has?
Yes – PTA funds are totally transparent. Treasurer statements are regularly
distributed at PTA meetings. After every event, our Treasurer gives a
detailed breakdown of costs incurred and any money raised, depending
on the nature of the event.
How can I keep up-to-date with PTA news if I cannot attend
meetings?
A newsletter is produced each term by the PTA and this gives Dates for
Diaries, updates on forthcoming events and details fund raising totals
from any events that have taken place. It will usually contain a plea
for volunteers for anything from helping at the Infant Disco to blowing
up balloons or wrapping presents for Lucky Dips!

Here are some ideas to get you started ……..More PLC than PTA?
Has the traditional PTA changed its image? Do you feel we need to be
more or less focussed on fund raising or should the social aspect take
priority?
