Values

Our strength and purpose as a community working collaboratively is expressed in our motto membra sumus corporis magni (‘we are members of a great body’).  The following are the values we wish to encourage in the lives of every member of the Bootham community, whether staff, volunteers or students. We try to see that of God in everyone, to value difference and encourage the strengths, talents and gifts of each individual. We seek to develop personal qualities of integrity, self-discipline and responsibility.  We encourage respect for others, and care and concern for the communities to which we belong – our school, our city and region, the international community of which we are citizens and the wider community of all living things. We value the conscious use of silence for personal and corporate reflection, and as an opportunity for people to be open to the light within. We value friendliness and informality. We educate children in the non-violent resolution of conflict, and about sustainability, simplicity and a detachment from material goods in the pursuit of the welfare of others.

PTA at Bootham Junior School
All parents, staff and friends of the school are most welcome to attend the meetings, which are usually held twice per term.
The association organises both social and fundraising events throughout the year. Click here for the Junior School PTA

Quakers in York founded Bootham School in 1823.  Bootham Junior School became part of Bootham School in 1997.
Quakers are Christians who believe that everybody has something special (“that of God”) in them.  As a Quaker school, we try to be honest, tolerant, open-minded and peaceful.  People from many different backgrounds and beliefs form our school community.

We have purpose-built school with light and colourful classrooms, a well equipped sports facility, a dedicated ICT suite, two adventure playgrounds, gardens, pond area and library. Music is known as a particular strength at Bootham and we benefit from all the specialist input from the senior school.

Parents and friends of the school are regularly invited to attend assemblies, productions and concerts throughout the year.

Our aims
Bootham School aims to promote learning, citizenship and self-confidence.

Learning
Our children are encouraged to be adventurous and challenging
in their search for truth, engage in the process of learning, enjoy learning for its own sake and continue learning after they leave school.  They will be helped to become independent learners.
We offer a curriculum which stimulates different styles of learning, affording children a range of experiences through which they can reach their potential.

Citizenship
Our children will be taught to demonstrate kindliness and carefulness for others and to value diversity.  They will learn the importance of resolving conflicts without violence. They will be offered opportunity for service, to work for the good in society,
and for ‘letting their lives speak’.  They will be encouraged to engage actively with the life of the school, the local community, and the wider world.

Self confidence
We will help our children develop spiritual and physical well-being, and a proper understanding of themselves and their place in the world.  They will learn to be open to the ideas of others, and learn to be discriminating.  We will encourage our students to have the imagination to change the world and maintain the hope that it can be done.
