HISTORY
History is taught in specialist classrooms with interactive whiteboards and computers. All pupils study History at Key Stage 3, covering a variety of topics ranging from Medieval Realms to Slavery to the Holocaust. History is a popular option both at GCSE and A level. Exam success at both levels reflects the strong motivation of our students, a number of whom go on to study History or related subjects such as Law or Archaeology at university.
We believe that educational visits are an important way of enhancing students’ understanding, and enjoyment, of the past. For example, Upper Schoolroom pupils visit Styal Mill & the Beth Shalom Holocaust Centre. Historical Services to Schools come into School for a day of Civil War workshops for Middle Schoolroom whilst College historians attend lecture days to enhance their A-level studies in Manchester and London. The Department also hosts visiting speakers for the Historical Association – most recently Professor Edward Acton speaking on the Russian Revolution. We also organise an annual overseas educational visit. Recent destinations have included Moscow & St. Petersburg, Eastern Europe (Berlin, Krakow & Prague) and World War 1 Battlefields as well as a weekend visit to Paris for the French Revolution.

The Department broadly follows the National Curriculum in Key Stage 3. The Department is responding to the current changes in the National Curriculum with a view to the need for a greater emphasis on Local History.N.B. From September 2008 both the GCSE & A-level specifications will be changing. GCSE will be changing from Edexcel’s Schools History Project to their Modern World History course to provide a more coherent and comprehensive overview of modern history. The A-level will be changing from the current OCR History A to their new History A specification.Additional material for GCSE & A level students (past papers, copies of specifications etc) is available at:
