General Studies

Introduction
General Studies aims to provide a breadth and balance to the A Level curriculum, which, almost inevitably, concentrates on a more limited field of academic work, compared to the wide range of subjects previously studied at GCSE. The course complements other learning, whilst also enhancing the key skills required for A level study.

The Course
The AQA (specification B) GCE General Studies course leads to an AS level qualification for all students, with the possibility of the full A-level qualification by continuing to A2, where appropriate. The course provides a interdisciplinary approach which focuses on topics and issues in contemporary society while emphasising thinking and analytical skills. It requires students to demonstrate a breadth, as well as depth, of knowledge and to make connections between, and integrate ideas across, subject disciplines.

The AQA specification consists of the following units:

AS
A2

Module 1:

Conflict

Module 4:

Module 2:

and covers a wide range of topics including:

Career Openings
Every employer or university department emphasises critical and analytical thinking as a key criterion. Whilst General Studies as a qualification is not a direct link to any career, the skills practised and the knowledge acquired are fundamental to every subject in the curriculum. General Studies is therefore highly regarded by many university admission tutors, and success in this subject can be crucial in gaining you entrance to a wide variety of university courses.
